Stephenville boy makes his film debut in 'Welcome to the West'

Carter Van Zandt, 11, of Stephenville made his screen debut in “Welcome to the West.” The multimedia concert film premiered online Nov. 20 and includes the Gilbert Intermediate School fifth-grade student and host of other Stephenville residents in front of the camera and behind the scenes.

Dallas-based nonprofit Lumedia Musicworks filmed the movie a few weeks ago at Pannill Ranch and other places in Stephenville to celebrate the life of the American rancher, and the musical portion was shot in Celina. The entire production is available online at www.lumediamusicworks.com through Nov. 30. The 50-minute production features poetry, sonatas, concertos, traditional fiddling, folk tunes and 1940s western swing paired with contemporary and historic film footage and photographs from the Library of Congress.

Carter plays Cowboy and his family’s horse, 3 Bars Chiccado “Marvin,” also is featured. Others in the film are Thane Isaac of Denton as Jacob, and who also is one of Lumedia’s Baroque violinists; Molly Hammond of Houston as Woman, and who also plays the harpsichord; and Biscuit of Houston, who plays Dog. Isaac, Hammond, Lumedia’s artistic director Julianna Emanski of Frisco and alto and Baroque violinist Stephanie Noori of Westworth Village, also play traveling musicians in the film.

RJ Wall of Stephenville reads a poem by cowboy poet Paul Kern of Utah in another part of the production.
