Lumedia Musicworks releases Garsenda and the Trobairitz, Feb. 11
The latest installment of “Stories” explores underrepresented works of the first women composers in this comedic docuseries. Garsenda, 13th century ruler of Provence, made her mark as a composer, writer and poet. The episode debuts at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11.
DALLAS - Eight hundred year ago, it was the women who were running Provence, France while the men were on crusade. During that time the arts flourished. The female troubadours, “Trobairitz” (Troo-bah-reetz), were more elusive than their male counterparts. Troubadours were similar to popular singer-songwriters today. They wrote about courtly love, life, and the wars they fought.
“Garsenda wrote music and was a chief patron of the arts. She, along with other influential women, comprised an extraordinary group of artists known as the Trobairitz,” said Stories creative director, Jendi Tarde. “They are some of the first women composers of the western world.”
Tarde researches, writes, and directs the series. Artistic director Julianna Emanski and her team edit the video into the final project for release.
“We don’t know much about Garsenda and the Trobairitz, except for things like a list of men they slept with, for example,” explains Emanski. “We now call Garsenda the mother of dragons, for fun.”
Garsenda and the Trobairitz debuts at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11. There is no cost to watch. Donations are accepted and go toward bringing arts programming to senior assisted-living centers throughout Dallas-Fort Worth.
