De la Cruz (1648-95) was a Mexican nun, writer, poet and composer during the Baroque period. She’s known as the Phoenix of Mexico. “Sor Juana is a respected philosopher and artist who spoke out against abuses of the Spanish government and the Catholic church,” said Julianna Emanski, Lumedia’s artistic director and a Grammy nominee. “She was a champion for the indigenous people.”
