The rodeo may have been canceled this year, but Lumedia Musicworks is bringing a little yee-haw of its own to Houston.
On June 28, the Dallas-based performing arts nonprofit will present an exclusive sneak preview of its latest original short film, “The Last Haw,” at Goode Co.’s Armadillo Palace. The advance screening, emceed by artistic director Julianna Emanski, will be followed by the world premiere of the quirky silent Western, which was filmed by Cameron Covello at For Worth’s legendary White Elephant Saloon. With the help of dialogue text frames, the seven-minute work, starring Houston’s harpsichordist Molly Hammond as the heroine, tells the tale of a poker game gone awry to in the intensity of “Le Vertigo,” a 1746 composition by Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer. Directed by Derrick Robert Brown, the story follows two women — Hammond and Jendi Tarde, as the bartender — who team up to out smart a bandit and his two goons.
